mpd and background noise

Reported by: gsenna Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: packages Version: Trunk
Keywords: mpd, noise, Cc:

Description

Hello,
Whenever I start playing something (I tried mp3 and AAC) with mpd (16.5 from repositories and then built 16.1 using makefiles from Backfire RC6) I hear background noise. I tried changing the soundcard but it's the same thing. If I do "mpc stop", then wait a second, and "mpc play" again it starts playing without the background noise. So, one or two of three times it starts with background noise. Odd thing is that when it starts like that, it plays all like that even if you do "mpc next".
"mpd --no-daemon --verbose --stdout" shows no errors.
It could be mpd or alsa then.

I sysupgraded to the same image, but now using the sysupgrade version instead of factory (openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3020-v1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin).
Now mpd works. Also with the factory image installed before, I had to remove kmod-usb-ohci for a hub to work and now the same hub works out-of-the-box. Maybe the factory image is bad. Anyway, please close this ticket.

Discard my last comment. Same problem with sysupgrade version.

Sorry, it was a bad config in mpd.conf. 'device hw:0,0' needed to be uncommented. Otherwise it would start playing with noise every other time.

Replying to gsenna:

I have to use 'device plug:dmix' because I want to mix with other sounds... so I get still these noises. any hint how to get rid off?

another thing on this: when pauseing and playing again, every second time the sound is not clear.

This seems to be an alsa dmix issue.

Deactivating dmix by using 'device hw:0,0' solved that issue for me.

Using madplay works, because it circumvents dmix as well (as far as I know).

This is on an WDR4300 with a Behringer UCA 222 USB sound card. Anything I can do to debug dmix?

(Googling dmix issues on embedded devices got me some reports in the same direction, but I cannot find them now anymore..)

please use 'device hw:0,0', as it works. if you want to fix the dmix problem feel free to send a patch to the ml.
