Description

I am very new to OpenWRT. I am very impressed and have it working on a Dell TrueMobile 2300. Here's a problem which would be helpful to fix in either the code or the wikis, but I'm not sure who already knows what so perhaps here is a place to put it in front of more qualified eyes.

Suppose I

# nvram set wl0_key=2
# nvram set wl0_key2=ffffffffffffffffffffffffff
# wifi
# iwconfig

eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"cellar"

Mode:Repeater Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:11:50:64:23:91
Tx-Power:15 dBm
RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr=2346 B
Encryption key:FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FF [2]
Link Signal level:-54 dBm Noise level:-83 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:34 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

This connection doesn't work. The [2] shown at the end of the encryption key seems to have something to do with the problem. Instead, if I

# nvram set wl0_key=1
# nvram set wl0_key1=ffffffffffffffffffffffffff
# wifi
# iwconfig

eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"cellar"

Mode:Repeater Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:11:50:64:23:91
Tx-Power:15 dBm
RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr=2346 B
Encryption key:FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FF
Link Signal level:-53 dBm Noise level:-90 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:34 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Note the index is not displayed after the encryption key, and the connection works fine. This behavior differs a little from what I've seen on regular desktop machines. I don't know if the problem appears on non-Dell boxes, or if it's resolved elsewhere, etc., so I'm not sure where the fix or documentation should be inserted.

I've had a lot of fun getting OpenWRT up and running. Thank you for a terrific package.

WR is ancient and no longer developed...

It might be fairer to say White Russian is "stable" and "functioning". I love what I see coming with Kamikaze, but there are a number of routers... um, mine... which it's reputed to not run on.
