Compiling GCC and at least the toolchain and the kernel takes it's time.

This is not enough information to analyze your problem. First, post which revision you're using and what target you're building. Then post your output from "make world V=99" please (hint: use wiki markup to post logs, see "Preformatted Text" in WikiFormatting).

If you're desperate for a fix, try to setup a syslog server on a remote host and enable network logging to find out if there are any suspicious log entries.

Run something like dstat / top along with the build to find out what is using the resources.

Isn't the gcc build already finished at this point ? I remember insn-attrtab takes a long time to compile on systems with low memory.
