Replying to florian:

Fixed with [15915]. vnstati is in a separate tarball.

You're correct in saying that the old vnstati is in a separate tarball although that separate tarball isn't even linked to on the vnstat homepage anymore. The new vnstati was merged into the 1.7 vnstat tarball, hence I think re-opening this ticket is wise.

There's also the issue of using either the cron or daemon update method. Should a uci setting be added to pick the appropriate one, requiring changes to the init script which is only currently used for backup database downloading, or should the daemon method just be used? If the daemon method is used, SaveInterval 30 would need to be used instead of the default SaveInterval 5 in vnstat.conf if the cron change from r14218 wants to be kept. The other bits from http://humdi.net/vnstat/man/vnstatd.html might also want to be considered:

For embedded and/or low power systems more tuned configurations are possible. In such cases if the interfaces are mostly static the PollInterval can be rised to around 10-30 seconds and UpdateInterval set to 60 seconds. Higher values up to 300 seconds are possible if the interface speed is 10 Mbit or less. SaveInterval can be rised for example to 15, 30 or even 60 minutes depending on how often the data needs to be viewed.

The attached patch merges vnstati into the vnstat Makefile, uses vnstatd and includes some minor changes in the init script, removes the obsolete crontab entry and adds the tarball's vnstat.conf (not sure what the nomenclature is when both uci and non-uci config files are present) with the following settings changed:

UpdateInterval 30 -> UpdateInterval 60
PollInterval 5 -> PollInterval 30
SaveInterval 5 -> SaveInterval 30
