An easier Failsafe

Reported by: mbm Owned by: nbd
Priority: normal Milestone: 1.0-rc5
Component: base system Version: 1.0
Keywords: Cc:

Description

Before the next release we need to make failsafe 100% reliable and very easy to get into.

I'm getting reports that the leds flash but the device doesn't respond at 192.168.1.1, or that it's impossible to get into failsafe on devices without the DMZ led -- timing it is too difficult.

Idea discussed with nbd -
Replace the failsafe scripts with a daemon, the daemon should control the leds and poll the reset button. Network broadcast messages should be used to indicate status -- "press reset now for failsafe" and "now entering failsafe". The normal init.d startup process should be bypassed.

Rejected ideas -
Try to ping some obscure ip unroutable address on startup, if it responds then go into failsafe; users would be instructed to reconfigure their ip address and reboot the router. -- Rejected due to possible remote abuse.

On a related note, we should also look into providing a 'reset to defaults' that will work on all devices.

  • Milestone set to 1.0-rc5
  • Owner changed from developers to nbd
  • Status changed from new to assigned
  • Version set to 1.0

Seems like adding b44 and kmod-switch would make this easier and more reliable
